Heart Catheterization & Angioplasty
A catheter-based procedure to both diagnose and treat blocked heart arteries — often in a single visit.
What it is
During cardiac catheterization, a slender tube is threaded through a blood vessel to the heart to measure pressures, assess blood flow, and open narrowed arteries. When a blockage is found, angioplasty (a tiny balloon) and a stent (a small mesh scaffold) restore normal flow.
Why it's done
It is used to evaluate and treat coronary artery disease, relieve angina, and — in the setting of a heart attack — quickly reopen a blocked artery.
What to expect
Performed with sedation and local anesthesia through the wrist or groin, most procedures take under an hour. Many patients go home the same day or after a short observation, with a brief recovery and clear aftercare instructions.
