Cardiac Stress Testing

Tests that show how your heart performs under exertion to reveal hidden blood-flow problems.

What it is

A stress test measures your heart's response to physical activity — usually walking on a treadmill — while we monitor your EKG, heart rate, and blood pressure. Nuclear and imaging stress tests add pictures of blood flow to the heart muscle for greater detail. For those unable to exercise, medication can safely simulate exertion.

Why it's done

Stress testing helps evaluate chest pain, assess the significance of known coronary disease, gauge exercise tolerance, and guide treatment decisions.

What to expect

Plan for about an hour (longer for nuclear studies). Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes, and follow any instructions about food, caffeine, and medications beforehand.
